On Friday I’ll hold a piece of rubble in my hand, but not just any piece of rubble. It was handed to me by a firefighter at ground zero in October 2001, a few weeks after 9/11. I first visited the site two weeks after the attacks and watched the still smoldering wreckage of what had been the World Trade Center. I was helping coordinate the first memorial service at the site for the families of victims, which was held on Oct. 28.
