Two US Capitol police officers were injured and taken to hospital on Friday after reports that someone rammed a vehicle into them in a new attack on the seat of Congress.
US Capitol Police confirmed what it called a “critical incident” in a tweet, saying it was responding to the attack, which caused the halls of Congress and its office buildings to be placed on lockdown.
“USCP is responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers. A suspect is in custody. Both officers are injured. All three have been transported to the hospital,” it said. The USCP later corrected the tweet to say the incident occurred on Constitution Avenue.
The attack against US Capitol Police comes less than three months after the January 6 assault on Congress by pro-Trump supporters trying to block the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. One Capitol Police officer was killed after sustaining injuries during the assault.
Anthony Coley, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice, said attorney-general Merrick Garland was “actively monitoring” the situation after being briefed on it. Biden had just arrived at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, when the attack occurred.
