Iran and Saudi Arabia are on track to normalise relations now, after being bitter Middle East rivals for the past seven years. In 1979, the Iranian revolution caused Saudi Arabia to accuse the Shiite state of attempting to “export” its revolution, leading to a long trail of hostilities. In a surprise move, on March 10, 2023, Tehran and Riyadh announce Chinese-brokered plans to resume ties after seven years.
