The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,317.41 on Monday with a loss of -126.93 points or -0.50%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,755.88 with a loss of -11.90 points or -0.43%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,468.63 for a gain of 19.60 points or 0.26%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 19.59 with a loss of -0.30 points or -1.51%.
Monday’s market movers
Treasury yields continued to be a factor, causing less demand in equities. Technologies rallied on Monday, helping the Nasdaq and S&P 500 technology sectors to close with a gain. The 10-year to Two-year Treasury, however, continued to tighten to a spread of 0.2873.
Earnings reports were mostly upbeat, but this week is expected to be one of the busiest reporting weeks for the third quarter. Polaris Industries Inc. (PII) topped the day’s earnings beat list with an upside surprise of 18.47%, beating expectations by 9 cents.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to 0.17 in September.
- The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills and six-month bills at the following rates: three-month, 2.300%; six-month, 2.425%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
- DowDuPont (DWDP) -2.49%
- Goldman Sachs (GS) -2.13%
- American Express (AXP) -1.86%
In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,539.50 for a loss of -2.54 points or -0.16%. The S&P 600 closed at 961.94 for a loss of -0.12 points or -0.01%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,601.33 for a loss of -22.66 points or -0.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,571.49 for a loss of -72.01 points or -0.75%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,863.15 for a loss of -9.02 points or -0.48%; the S&P 100 at 1,231.02 for a loss of -5.07 points or -0.41%; the Russell 3000 at 1,623.38 for a loss of -6.66 points or -0.41%; the Russell 1000 at 1,522.44 for a loss of -6.54 points or -0.43%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,350.82 for a loss of -120.00 points or 0.42%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 692.62 for a loss of -5.49 points or -0.79%.
