Public market coming to Des Moines Social Club

The Greater Des Moines Partnership is announcing a big change to the Des Moines Social Club Wednesday.A post on the Greater Des Moines Partnership website shows, “A public market at Firehouse No. 1 at 900 Mulberry St. is an exciting concept that builds upon an existing community resource, bringing together local food, art, entertainment, educational opportunities and much more. A public market answers a call from the community by invigorating a creative environment and continuing the vision of a vibrant, collaborative community.”KCCI 8 News first reported in July that the Des Moines Social Club was no longer financially sustainable, and the board was looking to reorganize. A new location for Scenic Route Coffee Shop opened today in the social club area. Malo will be staying.Owners say weddings and events scheduled for 2019 are expected to resume as planned. At the time, the Social Club said it remains committed to its mission to use the arts as a catalyst to create community engagement.Wednesday, the Social Club Board of Directors said something new and wonderful was coming to the location.”A variety of owner-operated shops or vendor areas and typically provides fresh and often locally grown food or produce for purchase year-round. In our commitment to serve this organization and the community, we understand that we must be open to new ideas, energy, and leadership. It is now time for the organization to evolve and transform. While the programming may not look like it has in the past, we welcome the possibilities that come with the evolution of this glorious facility in the continuing mission to create unprecedented community engagement. Something new and wonderful is coming, and we are thrilled to have been a part of its emergence. To all of you who have supported our activities these many years, we thank you. It was not immediately clear if the current social club organization would remain in place as the new public market takes shape.
